Message from the Founder and Chairman of the Kamnoetvidya

Science Academy Governing Board

“…Science and technology are powerful devices for building up Thailand’s competitiveness, helping the country to step out onto the world arena with pride”.

In the Global Competitiveness Report in 2011 – 2012, published by the World Economic Forum, Thailand remains categorized in the group of Efficiency-Driven Economies. Thailand’s overall competitiveness ranked 39th in the world, the higher-education quality 62nd, and the technological readiness 84th. In order to jump-start the development to a level Thailand can rival the leading countries in Asia, both the government and the private sectors must cooperate to improve education quality, and support frontier research, systematically and continuously.

Endeavoring to be a part of this progress, the PTT Group believes that founding a science- technology-focused and research-based university, Vidyasirimedhi Institute of Science and Technology (VISTEC) and a science academy for high-ability students, Kamnoetvidaya Science Academy (KVIS) is a way to concretize Thailand’s dream to create a good learning environment in the country. To honor Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn’s 60th birthday, the PTT Group initiated the project to establish a university focusing on science and technology together with its accompanying science academy for high-ability students in 2015.

The institutions are based in Rayong, which is regarded as one of the economic centers of the country, constituting 7% of the country’s GDP. Vidyasirimedhi Institute of Science and Technology will be the first university in Rayong to be on a par with leading universities of the world. VISTEC focuses on building frontier innovations and building knowledge through original and unique research, while KVIS aims at educating high-ability students at high school level to become future researchers and scientists.  The ultimate goal is to empower the people, to enrich the society, and to attain national sustainability.

The PTT Group only helps to allocate necessary resources for the implementation and the administration of the institutions, including tools, properties, and personnel. However, with the ambition to encourage true academic freedom within both institutions, the PTT Group will neither intervene with the administration nor the student selection process. This managerial independence will allow the country to nurture the people to their fullest potentials and improve Thailand’s competitiveness. Eventually, with qualified human resources in Science and Technology, the country can propel itself forward and maintain sustainable prosperity for its people.
